Volunteer Opportunities

The Council on Aging & Human Services utilizes the invaluable talents of volunteers to assist with many programs that otherwise would not exist. Below are some of the programs that use volunteers. If you would like to learn more about a particular program, click the link for its title.

Mobile Meals (Colfax, Pullman) We need Mobile Meal Volunteers 7 days a week to deliver one hot meal a day to homebound seniors. Volunteers use their own cars for pick-up and delivery of meals to each home. This need is filled by individuals and groups (e.g. churches, Rotary).

Transportation (Whitman, Asotin and Garfield counties) In the COAST program (Council on Aging Specialized Transportation), Volunteer drivers provide transportation with their own vehicles for individuals who otherwise could not access needed services such as medical appointments or grocery shopping. Each trip is authorized by COAST, which then matches an available volunteer driver to the need. Drivers are reimbursed for the miles they drive.

Volunteer Chore (Whitman County) The Volunteer Chore program needs volunteers who are willing to go to homes and perform minor caregiving or other indoor/outdoor tasks on a one-time basis. This program helps individuals who cannot afford to pay for such services and would other wise fail to get the help they need.

Other Opportunities To Volunteer

Senior Nutrition Sites in Colfax, Oakesdale, Palouse, Pullman, Rosalia, and Tekoa- Volunteers set up, clean up, take reservations, register participants, and provide entertainment.

Commodities - Approximately once each month, sacks of groceries are available to low-income families throughout Whitman County. Volunteers sack the groceries, hand them out, and keep records of the number distributed.

Office Help - Our office in Colfax periodically requires help with such tasks as typing, compiling documents, mailing, filing, and other office tasks.

Transportation Reservation Chairperson - Reservation Chairpersons take calls at their own home from individuals in their community who need to use the COAST-sponsored monthly shuttle to Spokane, Moscow, or Pullman. These names are reported to our transportation department for scheduling.

Board of Directors - Our Board of Directors is all volunteer. If you have helpful insights on ways to improve our methods, you are needed!
